Tanguar Haor or Tangua Haor: (টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওর)

Tanguar Haor is very common name to all in Bangladesh. It is situated at the greater Sunamganj district. It is about 100 sq kilometers place and the second greatest sweet water source. It is also known as Noykuri Kandar Beel to the local people. Tanguar Haor is at the upazila of Darmopas and Tahirpur of Sunamganj district and at the feet of Magalaya of India. 30 water fountains from Megalaya joined with this Haor. It is collection of 51 Haors and has become the largest Haor of Sunamgnaj district 9,727 acres of land. Among these land there are pure haor area, cultivation land and some villages. Once the Haor was full resources of environment and ecology and in 1999 it is declared that the environment is going to ruin or about to ruin area.  In the year of 2000 this haor is declared as Ramsar site. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) is signed between Bangladesh and Switzaland as socio-economic development and its changing, resources preservation and to ensure the sustainable management. From 2003 this Haor is under the control or supervision of Deputy Commissioner.


How to go Tanguar Haor:

From Dhaka to Sylhet by bus or train. You can go at day or night. If you go by train, can enjoy some beautiful scenery at both sides of the train line. From Sylhet to Sunamganj only by road. It can be public bus or by a hired vesicles. It takes about two hours +/-. From Sunamganj you can hired a boat or you can go from Sylhet to Tahirpur and there are lot of boats waiting for you.

Some important information for tourists/visitors:

·         From Dhaka to Sylhet by bus from Tk 470 to 1250 and takes about 6 hours +/-; The buses are available from early morning to mid night;
·         From Dhaka to train. There are two trains daily one is in the morning and the other one at night. It takes about 8 hours;
·         From Sylhet to Sunamganj it takes two hours by bus. Local bus fare is tk 100 from Sunamganj bus stand;
·         If you want to stay at Sunamganj there are some fine hotels and guest houses with cheap rates;
·         From Sunamganj you can hire boat (engine) directly or you can go to Tahirpur crossing the new inaugurated beautiful bridge over the river Surma by motor bike. And from Tahirpur you can hire the engine boat and go to the Tanguar Haor;
·         Better to get some cooking arrangement at boat and you can stay night at Tanguar Haor at boat and the next day can move whole day and come back to Sunamganj via Tahirpur or direct to Sunamganj

In the winter or dry season, about 24 Beels sides become dry and the original beels are insides the sides (Kanda in local language). The farmers cultivates the dried land as Karif and boro rice. The farmers also trend the castles in the dried land. The guests and local birds take shelter at the kandas and take some rest. But from 2012 no sides/kandas are seen. So, the local people marked with the bamboos.
